THERAPEUTIC DEVICE

BRIEF:
Date: December 2020
Project: Therapeutic device that integrates different palliative systems for patients who have to receive chemotherapy for breast cancer.
Designers: Martín Juarez.
Academic subject: Final degree project - Professors: DI. Fernando Valdez - DI. Leandro Fink.
Abstract: Breast cancer is a global problem. Chemotherapy is a therapeutic procedure with drugs, very common in the treatment of this disease. Most of the drugs used cause severe side effects during treatment, both physical and psychological, which cause a torturous experience during treatment. With this portable device, it was proposed to reduce the effects of the most important image of the person, hair loss, with the aim of providing the patient with a more enjoyable and comfortable experience.
Challenge: Development of medical concepts and use of simulation programs for textile materials.

BREAST CANCER:
It is an abnormal growth of cells in the breast tissue which can sometimes form a lump, also known as a tumor.

CHEMOTHERAPY:
Chemotherapy is known as cancer treatment that makes use of antineoplastic or chemotherapeutic drugs. The job of chemotherapy is to stop or reduce the massive and uncontrolled growth of cancer cells, delaying or slowing down the growth of the cancer. It also has a palliative function that aims to control the symptoms caused by the tumor, thus improving the patient's quality of life and increasing their survival.

WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF:
The sessions called "Cycles" are given every 28 days, it is a process in which different types of very strong drugs that vary according to the type of cancer are generally channeled intravenously.

SECONDARY EFFECTS:
After the first cycle of chemotherapy, the most frequent effects are: fatigue, anemia, digestive problems, skin disorders and alopecia.

CRYOTHERAPY:
For more than four decades it has been postulated that if one manages to "cool" the scalp of the person while receiving chemotherapy, hair loss could be prevented. Cryotherapy began to be used as a treatment to prevent alopecia associated with antineoplastic treatments in the 1970s.
PREMISE:
The local cold generates capillary vasoconstriction, therefore blood flow in the scalp decreases and, consequently, there is less delivery of the circulating drug to that tissue. Consequently less uptake and less toxic effect of chemotherapy in these cells. Reducing hair fall.

BACKGROUND:
Refrigerating caps ("cooling caps"), which consist of frozen refrigerants that are placed on the scalp, which must be changed every 20-30 min during the chemotherapy session, as they warm up. Between 7 and 8 helmets are required per session.

Automated systems with refrigeration equipment.
-
They are used: before, during and post cycle of chemotherapy.
-
They generate a gradual reduction in temperature in the area and it remains constant throughout the treatment.
-
Through a liquid that constantly circulates through internal channels in contact with the scalp.
A vest with a "hugging effect"

"Deep Sensory Pressure" Therapy
Benefits:
-
Improves body perception
-
Relieves pain and tension, allowing the body to relax
-
It generates a remarkable sensation of calm moments after wearing it and its effects are persistent.
-
Calms stereotypes, in some cases without the need for drugs
-
Improves balance thanks to the stimulating effect of the balls it contains
-
Increases attention span favoring learning
-
Alleviates and suppresses aggressive behavior

RESEARCH SUMMARY:
More than 100 people were surveyed, qualitative interviews were conducted and information was collected from medical professionals. With this information, the following conclusions were drawn:

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:
-
The cold should be applied evenly to the entire head.
-
The application of the first helmet produces a lot of discomfort and a sensation of cold.
-
Moving 8 hulls in conservatives is complex. 3 large conservatives are required
-
The assistance of a person is necessary during the entire chemo session.
-
The weight of the helmet causes neck and cervical pain.
-
The average transfer time to the health center is 30 minutes.
-
Most patients travel by car to health centers.
Comfort is something important to improve.
-
Don't be so heavy
-
Do not cover ears
-
Easier to put on
-
Make portability easy
-
Adjustable
-
Avoid skin burns

FINAL PROPOSAL

Systems
The pneumatic adjustment systems for the helmet, pad and vest are activated from the app, you can also regulate the temperature for a gradual decrease in temperature and stop all functions in case of emergency.
